Bruce J. Newton became Director of the West National Technology Support
Center in Portland, Oregon, in July 2004. In this position he is responsible for
managing the development of technical tools and providing technology support for
conservation in the Western United States.
NRCS works directly with landowners to help protect the Nation's soil and
water resources on private land in a voluntary, science-based approach. The
agency also works in partnership with a broad array of state and local groups to
sustain and enhance environmental quality.
Prior to this position, Newton served as Director of the NRCS National Water
and Climate Center in Portland. He was also a scientist with the National Water
and Climate Center and the West National Technical Center. Prior to joining NRCS
in 1993, Newton was a senior manager with the Environmental Protection Agency in
Washington, DC, responsible for managing various water quality programs. He
began his career in public service in 1979.
Newton, a New York native, received his undergraduate degree in Botany and
Chemistry from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Master of Science in Environmental
Science from Rutgers University.
