An unusually large amount of prickly cholla cactus on the Acoma Reservation has been cleared, allowing the land to begin restoring a natural plant community rich in native grasses.
 

 

 


Minnesota

In an effort to improve water quality in flood prone areas, NRCS in Minnesota is targeting a minimum of $2 million in financial assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) for the installation or enhancement of “ring dikes” around farmsteads.
 

 


Nebraska

Rapid response through the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program is credited with protecting 15 Fremont County residents who were in harm’s way.  The EWP rapid response is also credited with saving 5 homes and the area’s only access road from the ravages of the Wind River, swollen by rains during high spring runoff and the 11th wettest year on record since 1891.

The E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center (PMC) in Kingsville recently received the 2008 Plant Materials Certificate of Performance for Technical Document Preparation for the Central Region from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).  This award was presented in recognition of the PMC’s outstanding performance preparing scientific and popular documents in fiscal year 2008.

Thomas Vance signed up as an Earth Team Volunteer in December 2007.  During his time in Courtland, Virginia, he has assisted with a field visit and boundary identification for a Wetland Reserve Program applicant.  He also assisted with various administrative tasks in Southampton and other surrounding counties.

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) leadership recently asked NRCS Agricultural Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) Director Pete Heard to share some of his experiences and observations as part of their wildlife management and conservation career professional development.  Having worked as a law enforcement officer for the agency, earning a masters in wildlife/forestry, and coming back to serve as a wildlife biologist for six years, MDWFP staff felt that Pete was uniquely qualified.
