Reporting regions were based upon combinations of one or more adjacent or nearby Common Resource Areas (CRAs) with the aim of obtaining a minimum sample size of 50 samples per region, though two regions have 49 samples. Generalized Federal areas appear as separate polygons where NRI rangeland data were not collected, though reporting region boundaries can still be displayed within those areas. Purpose: Rangeland Reporting Regions were designed for reporting results from the 2003 - 2006 National Resources Inventory (NRI) on-site rangeland sample, as appears in the Rangeland Resource Assessment, first published October 2010 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detail/national/technical/nra/nri/?cid=stelprdb1041620). The regions were designed to be of a size that provides localized rangeland resource information without overly compromising confidence in survey-based estimates due to insufficient sample sizes. Additionally, some attempt was made to define the regions based upon similar natural resource characteristics. Regions represent combinations of one or more adjacent or nearby USDA/NRCS Common Resource Areas (CRAs), Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs) or Land Resource Regions (LRRs) with the goal of including at least 50 samples per rangeland reporting region. Generally, regions were defined in the following sequence: -- CRAs were combined with other adjacent or nearby CRAs within the same MLRA whenever a sample point total was less than 50 points. -- CRAs were combined with other adjacent or nearby CRAs across MLRA boundaries whenever the point total for combined CRAs within an MLRA was less than 50 points. -- MLRAs were combined with other adjacent or nearby MLRAs within the same LRR whenever a point total was less than 50 points. -- MLRAs were combined with other adjacent or nearby MLRAs across LRR boundaries whenever the point total for combined MLRAs within an LRR was less than 50 points. -- LRRs were combined with other adjacent or nearby LRRs, whenever the point count obtained in the previous steps was less than 50 points. Exceptions were made in some instances. For example, two regions were defined with 49 points, since the next adjacent or nearby unit to combine would either dramatically increase the point count or perhaps cross into another LRR. Note that although CRAs (which are subunits of MLRAs, and MLRAs are subunits of LRRs) are resource based, groupings of those that are adjacent or nearby otherwise ignore resource-based judgments. Consequently, dissimilar resource types occur within reporting regions. Note also that Federal areas appear as separate polygons where NRI rangeland data were not collected, though reporting region boundaries can still be displayed within those areas. Federal areas have been generalized to units of 30 square miles or larger. The CRA layer that was used for the creation of the rangeland reporting regions was completed in 2004 and obtained from the Geospatial Data Gateway of the NRCS National Cartographic and Geospatial Center on April 30, 2009. A CRA map delineation is defined as a geographical area where resource concerns, problems, or treatment needs are similar. Landscape conditions, soil, climate, human considerations, and other natural resource information are used to determine the geographic boundaries of a CRA (NRCS General Manual Title 450, Part 401, Technical Guides, Section 401.21, Definitions). The database for the Digital General Soil Map of the U.S. (formerly STATSGO) is considered useful in subdividing MLRAs into CRAs. The naming convention for a CRA is the MLRA symbol, followed by a dot and a numeric code (e.g., 102C.3 or 72.6). CRA symbols are correlated across state boundaries to ensure a nationally consistent CRA legend (GM450 C401.21). The National Coordinated CRA Geographic Database, Version 1.1, provides: 1) A consistent CRA geographic database; 2) CRA geographic data compatible with other Geographic Information System (GIS) data digitized from 1:250,000 scale maps, such as land use/land cover, political boundaries, Digital General Soil Map of the U.S. (updated STATSGO), and ecoregion boundaries; 3) A consistent (correlated) geographic index for Conservation Management Guide Sheet information and the electronic Field Office Technical Guide (eFOTG): and 4) A geographic linkage with the national MLRA framework.
