Inspired by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack’s People’s Garden, Florida NRCS geographic information systems and global positioning system coordinator Jean-Paul Calixte helped organize a community garden for his church and a low income Gainesville neighborhood.  With the help of the Florida Organic Growers and their Gainesville Initiative for Tasty Gardens program, ten raised-bed vegetable plots and a compost bin were recently set-up on church property by Calixte and church and community volunteers.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 through October 15 -- the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18.  Hispanic Heritage Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long observance.  The theme for this year's Hispanic Heritage Month is "Embracing the Fierce Urgency of Now."
