National Envirothon Compeition To Be Held in North Carolina

More than 260 teenagers from 45 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces will meet at the University of North Carolina – Asheville, from August 2 through August 8, to participate as finalists in one of North America’s largest high school environmental education competition, the 2009 Canon Envirothon.

NRCS wildlife biologist and long-time Louisiana Association of Professional Biologists Treasurer John Pitre was recently selected by the Alabama Wildlife Federation for the 2008 Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award in the category of Professional Conservationist. Federation President, Barney Callahan and National Wetlands Research Center Director Greg Smith made the presentation at the Federation’s 70th annual convention.  “I feel very honored and appreciative to receive such a notable award.  This award is presented to an individual for his/her outstanding contributions to the wise use and management of Louisiana’s natural resources,” John said.
 

 

 


California NRCS State GIS Coordinator Scott Splean Software Models Capture First Place at ESRI Conference
California NRCS State GIS Coordinator Scott Splean recently won first place at the 2009 International Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) conference Applications Fair for software models he developed that automates the steps for hydrologic analysis.  Scott’s software makes it easier to accurately describe and analyze watershed characteristics such as the flow rate, path and distance, and runoff of water moving through a watershed, thereby helping conservationists, inside and outside the agency.

During the last ten years, NRCS has developed and released a wealth of technical information on stream corridor restoration in the form of National Engineering Handbook (NEH) 653 – Stream Corridor Restoration and NEH 654 – Stream Restoration Design.  Following release of these documents, a team of NRCS experts from all of the technical centers skilled in stream restoration were tasked with making conservation easier for the field in applying stream restoration.

NRCS This Week features a weekly historical photo and caption.  NHQ, districts, States, RC&D councils, and all other NRCS entities are invited to submit a historical photo of activities or individuals who have worked or are working for the agency along with a caption.
