Participates at RCA Listening Session
Deputy Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Ann Mills and
NRCS Chief Dave White recently participated at a National Listening Session for
the newly reauthorized Soil and Water Resources Conservation Act (RCA).

National Envirothon Compeition To Be Held in North Carolina

teenagers from 45 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces will meet at the
University of North Carolina – Asheville, from August 2 through August 8, to
participate as finalists in one of North America’s largest high school
environmental education competition, the 2009 Canon Envirothon.

Grazing Lands Coalition Mentorship Program Kicks-Off

Dakota Prairies Resource Conservation & Development Council and NRCS are
providing technical and financial assistance to the North Dakota Grazing Lands
Coalition and their mentorship program.

Wildlife Biologist Recognized by Louisiana Wildlife Federation
NRCS wildlife biologist and long-time Louisiana
Association of Professional Biologists Treasurer John Pitre was recently
selected by the Alabama Wildlife Federation for the 2008 Governor’s Conservation
Achievement Award in the category of Professional Conservationist. Federation President,
Barney Callahan and National Wetlands Research Center Director Greg Smith made
the presentation at the Federation’s 70th annual convention. “I feel very
honored and appreciative to receive such a notable award. This award
is presented to an individual for his/her outstanding contributions to the wise
use and management of Louisiana’s natural resources,” John said.
Software
Models Capture First Place at ESRI Conference
California NRCS State GIS Coordinator Scott Splean recently won first place at
the 2009 International Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI)
conference Applications Fair for software models he developed that automates the
steps for hydrologic analysis. Scott’s software makes it easier to accurately
describe and analyze watershed characteristics such as the flow rate, path and
distance, and runoff of water moving through a watershed, thereby helping
conservationists, inside and outside the agency.
