Nebraska Farmers Transition to Organic Farming

More than a dozen farmers and local agricultural officials recently met at the South Central Nebraska Resource Conservation and Development office in Doniphan for an organic farming transition workshop.

Passing under “tree trunk roots,” visitors were treated to an earthworm’s perspective of the life that thrives in the soil when they entered the room-sized, inflatable “soil tunnel” exhibit at the Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) GreenFest weekend event at the Garden State Exhibit Center.
 

 

 


South Carolina

South Carolina NRCS Public Affairs Specialist Amy Maxwell and State Conservationist Niles Glasgow shared information about NRCS Farm Bill programs at the Southeast Quail Study Group Annual Meeting (NRCS image -- click to enlarge)Southeast Quail Study Group Host 15th Annual Meeting
South Carolina NRCS and the Southeast Partners in Flight sponsored the recent Southeast Quail Study Group annual meeting in Columbia, South Carolina.  Over 200 biologists and other wildlife professionals from over 20 states assembled in the Palmetto State to address issues such as declining bobwhite quail populations.

In an effort to increase media and public awareness of snowpack and water supply forecasting data, Washington NRCS District Conservationist Dave Kreft recently made the rounds at all three Spokane TV stations’ weather departments, briefing the meteorologists on current conditions and presenting each weather team with a certificate of appreciation for their on-going coverage of NRCS snowpack and stream flow reports.

Ben Smallwood Recognized at International IPM Symposium
NRCS National Pest Management Specialist Ben Smallwood was recently presented with the International Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Recognition Award at the 6th International IPM Symposium in Portland, Oregon for his abstract, NRCS Technical Services and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.  Symposium sessions addressed IPM across disciplines internationally, in agriculture, the market place, urban settings, and greenhouses.

Pennsylvania Earth Team volunteers Titusville High School (NRCS image -- click to enlarge)Titusville High School Earth Team volunteers -- Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania Earth Team volunteers from Titusville High School arrived in Crawford County ready to plant 500 hardwood trees and 400 shrubs.  The planting was part of an effort to stabilize a riparian zone along a portion of French Creek that had been steadily eroding and to enhance a wetland area on another section of the property.

This April 1949  photo by Gordon S. Smith depicts New York NRCS Soil Survey Party Chief Mary C. Baltz.  Mary did all of the soil surveying for seven planners in Madison, Oneida, and Lewis Counties.  As of May 1, 1949, Mary was the only woman in NRCS doing this type of work (NRCS photo -- click to enlarge).

NRCS This Week
